Things to do & What to see in Avignon

The multicultural birthplace of Provence’s culinary heritage, Avignon lies on the banks of the majestic Rhône River, brimming with all the colours and perfumes of Provence. It is known as the City of the Popes, a centuries-old city whose history is inextricably linked to the history of France itself, and its heritage is as rich and diverse as the region to which it belongs.

Summer or winter, when the weather is fine or during the balmy off-season, Avignon is alive with events and tourist attractions that make up a continually changing programme of festivities. There are countless historic monuments, festivals, exhibitions and events offering plenty of opportunities to discover every side of the city.

The Auberge de Cassagne & Spa is just a few kilometres from the city and its historic centre, making the hotel the ideal base for exploring the area. From January to December, Avignon is on show. As the former seat of Christendom, the city has retained a prestigious heritage, with most of its monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The hotel is just a few minutes from the main sights, such as the Pont Saint Bénezet, known as the Pont d’Avignon, and the imposing Cité des Papes. The Auberge de Cassagne & Spa is strategically located just a few minutes from most of the shows during the Avignon Festival.

Avignon has been celebrated in song, filmed with its Demoiselles, drawn, dramatised, and, of course, built with all the authenticity of one of Provence’s major cities.
