Some regions are meant to be seen. This one is meant to be tasted. Just outside the walls of the City of the Popes, the Rh\u00f4ne Valley unfolds a vineyard shaped by seven centuries of papal history, where nearly every village lends its name to a wine collectors chase around the world. <\/span>Wine tourism in Avignon<\/b> is about slowing down: a morning in the cellars of Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape, lunch under the plane trees, a glass shared with the grower who made it. It is also about choosing the right place to come back to at the end of the day. A few minutes from the ramparts, <\/span>Auberge de Cassagne & Spa<\/b>, a five-star Proven\u00e7al manor set in its own wooded park, has made wine far more than a line on the menu.<\/span><\/p>\n

Avignon, capital of the C\u00f4tes du Rh\u00f4ne<\/b><\/h2>\n

The title is well earned. Since the late 1990s, when Inter Rh\u00f4ne (the trade body for Rh\u00f4ne Valley wines) settled into the H\u00f4tel de Rochegude, Avignon has been the beating heart of one of France’s greatest wine regions. The Maison des Vins on rue des Trois Faucons is where the whole valley comes to taste.<\/span><\/p>\n

The nicest detail sits high above the city, on the Rocher des Doms gardens beside the Palais des Papes: around 540 vines, planted in 1997, producing a handful of bottles each year. It is the only vineyard in France classified as AOC within a city’s walls. A Michelin-starred table<\/b><\/h3>\n

Great wine deserves a great table. Philippe Boucher, in our kitchens since 1983 and a Ma\u00eetre Cuisinier de France (one of France’s most selective culinary distinctions), trained under Paul Bocuse and Georges Blanc and earned the house its Michelin star. With head chef Anthony Iorio, he cooks a bright, precise Proven\u00e7al cuisine of truffle, lamb, market vegetables and olive oil, built to meet the power of a Ch\u00e2teauneuf red or the freshness of a Ventoux white. The right base for the Provence wine route<\/b><\/h3>\n

Geography is on your side. From our park in Le Pontet, Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape is about 15 km away (a 20-minute drive), Tavel and Vacqueyras around 30 minutes, the Dentelles de Montmirail and Mont Ventoux barely further. Leave in the morning, come back whenever you like, and find complete quiet waiting for you, with private parking and no city traffic. Our <\/span>rooms and suites<\/span><\/a>, opening onto the garden or the pool, make coming back the best part of the day. A car is essential: most estates are in villages with no rail link, and tastings and driving do not mix, so plan a driver or a private tour if you intend to taste seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n

Four vineyards worth your morning<\/b><\/h2>\n

Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape, the essential one<\/b><\/h3>\n

Twenty minutes from the house, the village looks out over a sea of galets roul\u00e9s, the large rounded stones carried down by the Rh\u00f4ne, sometimes lying fifteen metres deep. They store the day’s heat and release it to the vines at night. Recognised in 1936 among the very first French appellations, Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape covers roughly 3,150 hectares and permits thirteen grape varieties, an unusual richness that explains the complexity of its wines. Above the village, the ruins of the papal castle recall Pope John XXII, the first pope to settle permanently in Avignon and the man who planted the vineyard. Allow a full morning: one estate visit (book ahead, most cellars require it), then the <\/span>Brotte Wine Museum<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>Maison des Vins<\/span><\/a>, and it will already be lunchtime.<\/span><\/p>\n

Tavel and Lirac, across the river<\/b><\/h3>\n

Cross the Rh\u00f4ne and everything changes. Tavel, also recognised in 1936, is the only French appellation devoted entirely to ros\u00e9, and its wines have a depth that surprises anyone who thinks they know what ros\u00e9 tastes like. Neighbouring Lirac, classified in 1947, produces all three colours on the same stony terraces. Half a day is enough, with garrigue scrub and cypress trees along the way.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gigondas, Vacqueyras and the Dentelles de Montmirail<\/b><\/h3>\n

This is the most scenic loop. Gigondas, promoted to cru status in 1971, and Vacqueyras, in 1990, sit beneath the limestone ridges of the Dentelles de Montmirail; a little further on, Beaumes-de-Venise makes the sweet Muscat that ends a Proven\u00e7al meal. When to come<\/b><\/h2>\n

Summer turns the vineyard into a festival. The Vacqueyras wine festival opens the season in mid-July; in early August, the F\u00eate de la V\u00e9raison fills Ch\u00e2teauneuf-du-Pape with a medieval weekend celebrating the moment the grapes change colour. On the last Saturday of August, the Ban des Vendanges, the ceremonial declaration of the harvest, takes over the square in front of the Palais des Papes, and it is free to attend. In November, Mill\u00e9vin celebrates the new vintage across Avignon. Spring and autumn are quieter, and our own favourites: growers have time to talk, and the light is at its best.<\/span><\/p>\n
